The Story of Buku Abel
Buku Abel is located in Buku, within the Hambela Wamena woreda of Ethiopia's West Guji Zone, at elevations reaching up to 2,350 metres above sea level. Farm founder Esayas Beriso originally gathered coffee cherries from neighbouring smallholder growers while working a government post. In 2009, he and his wife Meskerem Tomas transitioned to full-time coffee farming. Meskerem manages the harvest across their 31-hectare farm, where they cultivate Heirloom and 74158 cultivars alongside cherry sourced from local smallholders.
On-Farm Natural Processing
Unlike washed lots processed at partner wet mills, natural lots are processed entirely on-site at Buku Abel. Ripe cherries undergo careful initial sorting to eliminate unripe or overripe fruit before being spread onto raised drying beds for 7 to 10 days. The cherries are turned constantly to maintain uniform drying and shielded under protective tarps during midday heat and night frosts. Once dried, the coffee is sorted a second time, milled, and bagged for export in partnership with SNAP Specialty Coffee.
Tasting Profile
The resulting cup demonstrates exceptional clarity and sweetness for a naturally processed coffee, characterized by notes of peach, blueberry, and stone fruit balanced by fragrant black tea aromatics.
