The Subko VLGE, Paderu, Andhra Pradesh coffee represents a dedication to sustainable, farm-to-table-to-farmer operations. Founded by Subko Specialty Coffee Roasters and Craft Bakehouse, the Subko Co-op initiative is rooted in the village of K. Thadiputtu. This program focuses on the holistic advancement of the 'Subko Village,' empowering six tribal farmers from K. Thadiputtu village in Paderu, Andhra Pradesh. It aims to bring these individuals to the forefront of the third wave of coffee, nurturing growth within their entire community through direct trade, sustainability, and hyper-traceability.
The unique Gurram Hand Washed process involves a small tribal community who pulp coffee fruits by hand after fermentation. They then meticulously wash or demucilage the coffee using their bare hands, ensuring a distinct character in every bean. This medium roast lot, ideal for espresso or strong extraction, boasts a flavor profile of sweet honey and walnuts, a heavy body, and a prolonged, brown sugar-like finish with notes of caramel candy. A mellow, citric aftertaste, akin to semi-ripe dragon fruit, completes this exceptional cup.
Subko Co-op envisions expanding this initiative to adopt more clusters and establish training centers, empowering farmers and their families to become coffee professionals. This transformative force reshapes coffee cultivation by amalgamating sustainable practices, cultural preservation, and community empowerment, narrating origin stories and recognizing every stakeholder's heart in coffee cultivation.
