Tereré Recipe: Cold Yerba Mate with Citrus & Mint

Tereré — Argentine Cold Yerba Mate with Citrus & Mint

Tereré is the traditional cold version of yerba mate — the quintessential summer beverage of Argentina and Paraguay. Refreshing, energising, and a unique find in the UAE. It makes for the perfect conversation starter.

Ingredients

Steps

  • 1. Pack the yerba: Pack your mate cup or a short wide glass 2/3 full with 3 tbsp Patagonia Cítrico Yerba Mate. Tilt the cup at an angle and pack the yerba to one side — this is the traditional method to keep the bombilla clear.
  • 2. Add ice and citrus: Fill the remaining space with 1 cup crushed ice. Add 4 fresh mint leaves and the juice of 0.5 fresh lime on top of the ice.
  • 3. Pour cold and drink: Slowly pour 200 milliliters of cold water or cold lemonade over the ice — never hot water, that’s the whole point of tereré. Insert the bombilla straw, pressing it down through the yerba. Drink immediately.
  • 4. Keep refilling: Refill with cold water each time it empties. The same yerba can be refilled 4–6 times before the flavour fades.

Notes

You'll need a bombilla straw to drink traditionally. The cítrico blend from Patagonia Finest Tea already has mint, ginger and lemon — which makes it ideal for tereré without adding anything extra.
